Children ask questions naturally.
Why is the sky blue? How does music come from a radio? Where do people go when they die? What happens if I take this apart? Can I put it back together?
Then many of us grow older and begin asking fewer questions. We become busy. We settle into routines. We become protective of what we believe we already know. Sometimes we stop exploring because certainty feels safer than discovery.
But curiosity is not something we are meant to outgrow.
It is one of the ways we remain engaged with life. It helps us learn, adapt, connect with others, and imagine possibilities beyond our present circumstances.
This final Compass Point is an invitation to remain curious and open—to approach life not as something we have completely figured out, but as something still capable of surprising us.

🧭 What Curiosity Really Means
Curiosity is more than collecting facts.
It is the desire to understand.
It asks us to notice what others overlook, question what appears settled, and remain open when an easy answer is unavailable.
Curiosity says:
What am I missing?
How does this work?
Why do I believe this?
What can this person teach me?
What might become possible if I look at the problem differently?
To stay curious does not mean believing everything we hear. Openness is not gullibility. Healthy curiosity includes discernment—the willingness to investigate, test, compare, and revise.
It also requires humility.
Every honest question begins with an admission: there is something I do not know.
That is not a weakness. It is the beginning of learning.
🧭 Curiosity Keeps Possibility Alive
Curiosity expands the boundaries of the life we can imagine.
A person who believes there is nothing left to learn gradually becomes confined by what they already know. A curious person keeps finding doors—into new ideas, cultures, skills, relationships, technologies, and ways of understanding the world.
This matters especially when life changes.
The work we once performed may disappear. Technology may transform an industry. Our bodies may require different ways of living. Long-held beliefs may no longer explain what we have experienced.
In those moments, curiosity offers a question more useful than Why can’t things remain as they were?
It asks, What is possible now?
That question does not erase grief, uncertainty, or disruption. It creates movement within them.
Curiosity helps us shift from defending the familiar to exploring the available.
🧭 Curiosity Has Been a Compass in My Life
I have been curious for as long as I can remember.
As a boy, I read across mathematics, science, history, literature, and technology. Characters such as Sherlock Holmes showed me the power of disciplined observation. Spock speaking with a computer gave me an early glimpse of a future I wanted to understand.
In my early thirties, I encountered Leonardo da Vinci not merely as an artist, but as a model of integrated curiosity.
The Da Vincian principles gave language to something I had practiced instinctively: learning continuously, testing ideas through experience, sharpening the senses, becoming comfortable with ambiguity, joining art with science, cultivating the whole person, and recognizing the connections among seemingly separate things.
That framework stayed with me because curiosity has never belonged to only one area of my life. It shaped the software engineer, musician, strategist, writer, veteran, entrepreneur, and student within me.
Today, artificial intelligence allows me to explore questions that once would have required weeks of research, specialized access, or conversations with people I might never meet.
Yet technology is not the source of curiosity.
It is another instrument through which curiosity can move.
🧭 The Science Behind Curiosity
Research increasingly shows that curiosity affects how we learn, remember, connect, and adapt.
In a brain-imaging study published in Neuron, participants remembered information more effectively when they were highly curious about the answer. Curiosity activated areas associated with reward and increased interaction with the hippocampus, a region essential to memory.
In plain language, curiosity helps prepare the brain to receive and retain information.
A large review of approximately 200 studies found that intellectual curiosity was a meaningful predictor of academic achievement. Intelligence mattered. Effort mattered. But the desire to understand also helped determine how fully people used their abilities.
Curiosity may strengthen relationships as well. Research involving conversations between strangers found that curious people created greater interpersonal closeness. Genuine questions, careful listening, and interest in another person helped turn an interaction into a connection.
Lifelong learning remains important as we age.
In the Synapse Project, adults between 60 and 90 learned demanding new skills such as digital photography and quilting. Those engaged in sustained, unfamiliar learning showed greater improvement in episodic memory than participants assigned to familiar or less demanding activities.
The important distinction was not merely staying busy. The brain benefited from being challenged.
Researchers also use the term cognitive reserve to describe the brain’s capacity to maintain function or compensate when confronted with aging, injury, or disease. Education, intellectually demanding work, and mentally stimulating activities are associated with greater reserve.
This does not mean curiosity guarantees health or prevents dementia. The responsible conclusion is that sustained learning asks the brain to keep adapting—and that intellectual engagement is associated with healthier cognitive aging.
Curiosity is not childishness.
It is one of the capacities that helps keep us intellectually, emotionally, and socially alive.
🧭 What Closes the Curious Mind
Curiosity does not disappear only because we age.
Sometimes it is crowded out.
Fear tells us not to risk being wrong.
Pride tells us we should already know.
Routine tells us there is no time to explore.
Certainty tells us questions are dangerous.
Past disappointment tells us not to expect anything new.
And modern technology can create the illusion of curiosity while merely feeding us more of what we already believe.
Remaining open requires intention.
It means seeking evidence that may challenge us, listening before preparing our response, spending time with people whose lives differ from ours, and allowing new information to refine our understanding.
Changing our minds after learning something new is not inconsistency.
It is evidence that learning occurred.
🧭 A Little Exercise We Can Do Together
Choose something you encounter regularly but rarely examine.
It might be a belief, a routine, a person, a technology, a place, or a problem you think you already understand.
Ask:
What do I assume about this?
What have I never stopped to investigate?
Whose perspective have I not considered?
What question would I ask if I were not afraid of appearing uninformed?
What could I learn purely for the joy of learning?
Now complete this sentence:
One thing I am genuinely curious about is ____________.
Take one small step toward it.
Read an article. Ask someone a thoughtful question. Visit a place. Try a new tool. Study an unfamiliar subject. Listen to music from another culture. Learn how something works.
You do not need to master it.
Wonder is enough to begin.
🧭 A Bridge of Reflection
Curiosity does not require us to abandon everything we know.
It asks us to leave the room beside it.
Room for another interpretation.
Room for a better question.
Room for another person’s experience.
Room for mystery.
Room for wonder.
A closed mind may feel protected, but it eventually becomes a small place to live.
An open mind remains connected to possibility.
We will never understand everything about this extraordinary life. But we can continue paying attention. We can keep learning. We can resist becoming so certain that nothing new can reach us.
As long as we remain curious, some part of us remains ready to grow.

A compass does not eliminate uncertainty. It helps us orient ourselves within it.
